Pete
Laing
Trail design & build engineer
Following an eleven year spell as a Projects Engineer in the Electronics Industry, Pete went self employed in '98 and took on a contract with the Forestry Commission to design a new network of Mountainbike Trails for the the Tweed Valley in the Scottish Borders. Work started on the Glentress Red Route in early 2000, as the first phase of a three year project that has created a major recreation honey-pot for the Borders.
Other FE districts
keen to provide similar facilities have given Pete the opportunity to design
forest trail networks all over Scotland and the North of England and two
private contracts have given experience in the development of Multi-user
pathways.
Projects completed so far include Blue, Red and Black grade mountainbike
routes and a skills area at Glentress, Green and Blue Grade cycling
trails and a walking path in Craik Forest near Hawick and the first
half of a new XC and race course in Traquair Forest next to Innerliethen
in the Tweed Valley.
In addition to working with full time contractors, every second
Saturday is spent supervising volunteer trailbuilding groups; an
activity that is fast becoming a regular part of the Mountainbiking
scene. A sporting background that includes Motorcycle Enduros in
the 70's and early 80's, XC and road running, Triathlons and more
recently, Mountainbike Racing has failed to dampen an enthusiasm
for all sorts of outdoor sports and activities. Pete organises
and still competes in XC races and takes part in team events like
'Sleepless in the Saddle' whenever possible, albeit at a slower
pace than in his youth!
